5 Simple Ways to Boost Brainpower

April 13, 2017

You will need all the brainpower you can muster to create a new product in 48 hours! Therefore, we wanted to put together a list of things you can do every day to boost your brain’s cognitive ability, memory, and overall performance.

<p>

A lot of these things are not easy to fit in during a 48-hour invent-a-thon! Therefore, we’ve broken the list down into things you can incorporate into your everyday life and things you can do to boost brain power immediately.

<p>

Everyday Ways to Boost Brain Power- Before the competition (and after)

<p>

1. Sleep

Well, you likely won’t have much of a chance to do this during Make48- although the occasional napper is spotted throughout the competition! However, getting a good night’s sleep is a good way to keep your brain at optimal performance. Therefore, do your best to get excellent sleep before a Make48 event!

2. Eat well

Many foods, like salmon or any fish with full of healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, are considered excellent brain food. The Mediterranean diet overall (think olive oil, meats, fresh produce) is considered to be fantastic for your brain! Other foods, like blueberries, are considered to be extremely good for long-term memory. Nuts are considered overall fantastic memory foods, as they help promote not only long-term but also short-term memory.

3. Train your brain

There are lots of ways to train your brain in everyday life. Some companies have even specialized in brain-training games, such as Lumosity! But there are many ways to keep your brain active and engaged in ways that improve brain power. Doing new things you’ve never done before, or doing things you always do in a different way (using a different hand to write, walking backward) are great ways to stimulate your brain. Things like word games, using real-life maps that you have to follow yourself (sorry, no GPSs allowed), and calculating math equations solo are considered great ways to keep your brain at top performance!

Immediate ways to boost brain power

<p>

1.  Relax & Stay Positive

Ok, of course, this one fits into both categories, but anxiety and worry can actually kill neurons! So stave clear of these emotions during times of high pressure (like the competition) through active writing, deep breathing, or anything that makes you feel calm (do you struggle to feel calm during a competition? Here are 4 Tips on How to Stay Cool Under Pressure!).  Overall, your brain needs to feel calm and relaxed to perform at it’s best. Feeling relaxed can help with memory, problem solving, creativity & more!

2. Drink coffee

Kind of ironic, no? If you can’t relax, you could try coffee. Coffee can improve your short-term cognitive function, reasoning and reaction time. A fantastic tool for any all-nighter or 48-hour event. Nevertheless, there is a downside- coffee’s effects are not permanent and too much coffee can make some people jittery. So we recommend you drink your java with moderation.
