5 Useful Team Building Tips

By April 13, 2017Tips and Tricks

During Make48 events, teamwork is everything. In 48 hours, teams accomplish what others could take months or even years to build! Therefore, team building is essential to ensure team harmony and to keep things moving along smoothly!

This year, for the first time ever, Make48 is also accepting individual applicants! This means that people who have never met before (but know they have some great ideas!) will come together and create amazing products, making team building exceptionally important. Read on for some of our tips on fantastic team building!

Have One (1!) Leader

One of the things that can bring a team down easily is having too many people trying to take control of the situation, or having too many people trying to spearhead all ideas. In a team, everyone’s ideas should be heard and taken into consideration and important decisions should be made as a team. Nevertheless, having a team leader can make a world of a difference! Good leaders will encourage other team members, delegate tasks according to strengths or help manage team tasks. At Make48, teams choose a team captain, but ultimately it’s up to every individual team to work well together!

Have a Team Mentality

Having a team mentality means understanding that sometimes your ideas will not be chosen (although they may be great). A team, ultimately, should be like a mini-democracy, where everyone understands that decisions are made for the good of the whole team, not specific members! So, commit to this mindset and commit to your team!

Use your Strengths

The best way you can contribute to your team is by using your own individual set of skills. During Make48, you are going through the entire process of invention! While some team members may be excellent during brainstorming, others may be excellent at pitching their invention to the panel of judges.  Use your skills to contribute to the team! The more tasks can be specialized, the more can get done!

Make sure you have a clear, common goal

At every stage of the invention process, team members have to maintain a clear and common goal in mind. If every team member has different goals during product brainstorming, for instance, narrowing down to one idea to create can be extremely challenging! If team members all have different ideas on how a product prototype should look, you run into the same problem. Keep a common goal in mind and try to continue to work as a team throughout.

Talk to your team members

Communication is key, we know this! In order for a team to remain harmonious, every member has to be heard and feel valued. If a team member is being ignored, this could quickly lead to decreased productivity. If teams don’t talk, tasks or work can overlap and time can be wasted by having several people trying to work on the same thing.

During Make48, your team has 48 hours to create a new commercial product, so keep up that team spirit in order to excel!
