An Interview with Make48 CEO Tom Gray

The National Hardware Show brings together thousands of innovative exhibitors, products, and brands for an incredible yearly event. This year, Make48 is attending the NHS to showcase winning products, find new amazing contestants for our September 28-30 event, and enjoy all the perks of attending the National Hardware Show, such as exploring new products and vendors! We interviewed Make48 CEO Tom Gray about attending this year’s event.

“Over the years, we have continually displayed our products at the National Hardware Show. To this day, it still is the most effective way to reach both retail and distribution for any level of business either starting out with one product or introducing more innovation to a line. It is an exciting time for the Make48 movement and the National Hardware Show to team up as the first phase of launching the teams’ innovation to the world.”

In this case, Tom refers to the winning teams’ products being showcased at the Make48 booth! Be on the lookout for details, pictures and more on our social media!

Tom believes that, as companies, Make48 and the National Hardware Show have lots in common! “Both are very tied to new innovation. Make48 contestants create that innovation and the NHS displays and connects innovators to the decision makers. In the real world, these kinds of business models must work together to accomplish the end result. Buyers attend the NHS in droves to see new innovative products and startups attend to find those buyers. The synergy between Make48 and NHS is second to none.”

At each event, the NHS dedicates a showroom to innovative products from new inventors, called the Inventor Spotlight section. This section allows buyers and attendees to see what is up and coming in the market. On the first day of the National Hardware Show (May 9th, 4-5:30 pm), Make48 is inviting these bright minds to pitch live to the M48 team and tell us why they should be on the next season of Make48 TV. (Psst… if you are an inventor, register to pitch here!) “It is becoming increasingly harder to get involved as a competitor at Make48. This year at NHS we are allowing the 150 new inventors that have a booth at NHS to pitch to the Make48 team in person on why they should be on season 2 of Make48. In a way, this is similar to the SharkTank casting call, but those pitching will get the attention of the final decision makers: the Make48 team.”

Last but not least, we wanted to leave you with some of Tom’s excellent words of advice for all inventors. This is what he told us: “Try to avoid manufacturing your products too early. Conduct all testing, focus groups, merchandising and videos using final prototypes. It is highly likely many changes will indeed be made from what the inventor thought was a ready-to-market product. And don’t make a stockpile of stock in advance.”

There you have it folks! Remember that there is an open casting call for the next Make48 TV season- if you’d like to be a part of the next Make48 TV show, apply now! Our next event is this September 28-30 at the Kansas City Art Institute.
