Backyard Brilliance: Powered by the Sun

Everything is bigger in Texas and the Vandermont energy was no exception. Relive the magic below!

Make48 is a 48-hour competition where teams are presented with a challenge and tasked to build a physical prototype, create a sales sheet, produce a 1-minute marketing video and pitch their big idea to a panel of judges.

In March 2025, Vandermont, a private school where learners develop the ability to create and attain their own goals while fostering independence of thinking and enthusiasm for learning, hosted their first ever Make48! Their students formed 6 teams for the Make48 competition. With access to expert tool technicians along with high-tech equipment they were able to build almost anything.

For this challenge, collaboration is the key to success. Many people have big ideas, but few possess the resources to develop a prototype that turns them into reality. To build anything, different skills, materials
and equipment must work together to create a final product. Make48 allows this process to be achieved with a fun, fast-paced, and educational event. First place team will win $2000 and move on to Season 9 Nationals in November 2025 along with the second place team.

Vandermont is not a traditional school. They are a design-centered and competency-based innovative K-12 21st-century private Christian school focused on developing each learner’s God-given talents and interests by integrating competency-based curriculums through Inquiry and Design-Thinking pedagogies. Through a learner-led and student-centered model, they apply real-life skills to offer a purposeful education and give freedom to students to dive deep into their education by being curious, creative, collaborative, and empowered to take charge of their learning, all while providing a meaningful, joyful, relaxed, but rigorous environment.  Their approach to education assesses students based on their ability to demonstrate skills and knowledge as opposed to completing traditional basic coursework.

Event Date: Feb 28 - March 2, 2025
