Toddler STEM Experiment: Surprise Color Explosion

Courtney Rosenquist

Looking for a fun and simple STEM experiment to do at home with your toddler? This Surprise Color Experiment is a hands-on way to introduce basic chemistry concepts while sparking curiosity and excitement! I recently did this with my almost two-year-old, and he absolutely loved it.

Ingredients:

  • Muffin tin

  • Baking soda

  • Food coloring (various colors)

  • Vinegar

  • Small cup or dropper to hold vinegar

Steps to Follow:

  1. Prepare the Muffin Tin:

    • Add a few drops of different food coloring in each compartment.

    • Place a spoonful of baking soda into each cup of the muffin tin. (Tip: Keep the colors hidden by covering them with the baking soda for an extra surprise!)

  1. Set Up the Vinegar:

    • Pour vinegar into a small cup or container that your toddler can easily handle.

    • If you have a dropper, it's a great tool for extra fine motor skill practice! (we used syringes.)

  2. Let the Experiment Begin:

    • Encourage your toddler to pour or drop vinegar into one of the muffin tin cups.

    • Watch their reaction as the fizzing and bubbling reveals a surprise color underneath!

  1. Explore and Experiment:

    • Continue adding vinegar to different compartments to discover new colors.

    • Talk about the reaction: "What do you see? What color appeared?"

This simple yet magical experiment is a great way to introduce STEM learning at an early age while having fun together. Plus, the surprise element keeps toddlers engaged and excited to see what happens next. Ollie 10/10 recommends to friends!
