Did you catch the latest Make48 episodes on This Old House Makers Channel? If not, don't worry! You can watch both episodes now on Make48’s YouTube Channel! And for those who need it, episodes can be viewed with audio descriptions via DCMP (more on that below!).
This is the third year the Kansas State School for the Blind (KSSB) has hosted the Make48 competition, and it just keeps getting better. This incredible event gave visually impaired and blind students a unique opportunity to collaborate and unleash their creativity.
"I really appreciated the (Make48) program.” Theo Burkhalter, team member of WSSB said in an interview. “It gave me a chance to push my limits and try new things, which was really fun. I also loved learning from the other students and seeing how they approached problems and communicated with each other."
Make48: Accessible to All
To ensure everyone can experience the excitement of Make48, the team partnered with the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) to provide audio descriptions for their videos.
What is an audio description? It's like having a narrator describe the visual elements of a video, making it accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. Think of it as painting a picture with words! Audio description fills in the gaps by providing information about on-screen text, graphics, and actions that might not be clear through the audio alone.
The DCMP is a leading provider of accessible educational media, supporting students of all abilities, including those who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the National Association of the Deaf, this incredible organization is committed to making learning accessible for everyone. KSSB: A Hotbed of Innovation
The collaboration between Make48 and KSSB is truly inspiring. Over the past two years, KSSB has proven to be a powerhouse of talent, with student teams advancing to the national Make48 competitions in both 2022 and 2023! This year, KSSB students who have previously participated in Make48 served as mentors, sharing their knowledge and experience in the innovative KSSB makerspace with teams from all over the country.
A huge shout-out to the sponsors who made it all possible: The KC Blind All Stars (KCBAS), The DeBruce Foundation, Wet & Forget, Blind Spot KC, MTI Events, Healthy Blue Kansas, Westlake Ace Hardware, and OrCam.
